Have you been considering a blog refresh but are not sure if you should or not? Well, this blog post will help you out. I have gone through many blog redesigns with my blog Miss Millennia Magazine. And every time I changed it was for one of the reasons below.
Today I want to talk about five ways to know if it is time to update your website with a blog refresh.
1. Your site is hard to navigate
There are so many websites out there competing for your audience's attention. Having a website that is difficult to navigate makes your blog irrelevant. I know that sounds harsh but it is the truth! When I say hard to navigate I mean on desktop computers and mobile devices alike. Your website theme should be responsive meaning it looks different on a mobile device than it does on a desktop computer sot hat it is just as easy to navigate.
If it is hard to navigate to the place where you want to go on your blog or if it is not mobile-friendly, it is probably time for a blog refresh. But easier said than done.
The best thing you can do to resolve this issue is to try mapping out a content hierarchy or also known as a site map of your blog on paper. Start with the homepage on top, then the category pages, and keep going from there. Write it all out on paper then go to design it on your site. 2. Your brand has changed
Blogging is a journey and sometimes a brand change is a part of that journey. If your brand has changed names, your avatar has changed, or maybe you have had a niche change. Whatever may have changed, it could mean it’s time for a blog refresh.
That can mean changing your websites name, the layout, or even the brand colors and so on so forth. If this is the case I highly recommend taking some time out to think about how you want your new brand to be. A great way to start this is by using our blog branding cheat sheet.

3. You’re not getting your target audience to your blog
Does your blog have an avatar?
Are they finding your blog? If you’re targeting them in the right places and you’re still not getting the traffic you like, one of the reasons could be that you need a blog refresh.
If you already have your avatar details down, go back to your Avatar document sheet and review it again. What type of website would your avatar be attracted to? What type of color, font, and photos would they like? Use this information to guide you on what to refresh on your blog.

4. It has been several years since your last blog refresh
This one is subjective. Some bloggers keep the same blog design for years and years without worry. But chances are that their blogs are working for them. If your blog is not working for you and you think the blog design or brand has something to do with it; That may warrant a blog update.
This was one of the main motivating factors for me during my last blog design refresh. You can use a beautiful thing by Restored 316 like I did and I haven’t looked back since. 5. You don't like your site design
Last, but certainly not least, you just don’t like your site design is a big reason to do a blog refresh. This was also a reason why I change my site before. I thought I was there Magalie but I don’t know you tell me to take a look at my first website design tell me what you think.
Yeah, I know. I agree with you. Much better today.
But the unsightly appearance of my blog then was enough for me to update it. And it can be reason enough for you too. The only thing you want to make sure you do is one make sure you put enough thought into the overall design and structure of your website before changing anything.
The second most important thing is that you make sure that you’re not unintentionally sabotaging yourself by putting the most important things that you’re looking to achieve on the bottom of your page. For example, if your goal is to get more email subscribers, make that one of the first actions they are able to take at the top of the page.
If you have experienced one or more of the items on my list above then it is likely it’s time for a blog refresh. But don’t get overwhelmed with it because it can be a very big project. My first blog redesign took me over a month to figure out. My last one took two weeks. You don’t have to overthink it. Here are a few tips to get started if your blog needs a refresh.
- Have a clear picture of what you want your site to look like. Use tools like Balsamiq to do a digital sketch or write it out on paper.
- Have a clear understanding of what you want your site navigation to be. Don’t make your website incredibly confusing and hard to navigate for the sake of it being cutesy. Think about the goals you want to achieve when someone visits your website and prioritize them on the homepage.
- Don’t overthink it and use the right resources to get the job done. Like I mentioned above, it only took me two weeks to create my last blog design. And it can take that long for you too if you have the right resources. Here are a few you should consider using.
